-Hi, I'm Owen! I'm a young birder and nature lover from Waterloo Ontario (Canada). I have always been interested in bugs but ever since covid-19 hit birding has become something that I deeply enjoy. My passion for bugs started when I found an eastern black swallowtail in my family's dill patch, I raised it and ever since then I have loved bugs (especially butterflies and moths) and I raise them every year. My love for birds started when I found some wood ducks in a pond near my neighborhood and all of a sudden I cared so much about birds. I'm not sure why seeing the wood ducks made me love birds but it could have been the little baby duckling's cuteness or the colorfulness of the male! When I got my first bird feeder in October of 2021 it was like having a live T.V. show of birds and I never got tired of watching them, whether it was a goldfinch or a chickadee, I loved it so! I do have a favorite bird and it is the American Redstart. iNaturalist (and eBird) have taught me so much over the years of loving living things that I can share with my family, friends, and teachers!
I am a devoted Christian and I believe that everything was created by God for us to enjoy and use in a mannerly way.
I got my first camera on April 21, 2022 and I used it almost every day. It is was a Canon Rebel XT 70-210mm lens. I got a new camera on February 24, 2023 and I use it almost every day to. It is a Canon Rebel T2i with a 55-250mm lens.
I mostly ID birds and the butterflies of Ontario. I know many of the birds found in the US and Canada. Right now I am starting to study the birds of Europe and Australia which I find have some very cool and pretty birds. Some things am really good at IDing are True Swans, especially telling the difference between Trumpeter and Tundra Swans. Note the Tundra having a thin eyeline, much smaller than the Trumpeter Swan, and almost always have a yellow lore. Trumpeter Swans are much larger than Tundra Swans, have a thick eyeline, and no yellow lore. I also ID to all other waterfowl and perching birds. Feel free to ping and I will try my best to help with any ID. IF I make a mistake please tell me what I missed or how to ID this species better.
