Body masses of ungulates in Hluhluwe Game Reserve, Zululand, South Africa

Body mass is one of the most important aspects of any animal.

In this Post, I reiterate the data presented in two relatively obscure publications, and I illustrate the forms. The data are averages, usually with fairly large sample sizes.

The location is Hluhluwe Game Reserve, Zululand.

Stainthorpe, H L (1972) Observations on captive eland in the Loteni Nature Reserve. The Lammergeyer 15: 27-38.

The only specimen weighed in this study was an adult male individual with body mass 391 kg.

Meinertzhagen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Meinertzhagen#Discoveries) cited average-size adult males as weighing 729-945 kg.

Body mass in captive adult males in Ukraine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Askania-Nova#Flora_and_fauna) averaged 700 kg.
