Monthly Bird Survey at Hornsby Bend

I led a group of 7 people on the monthly bird survey at Hornsby Bend this morning. I was surveying my usual area starting at the birding shelter and ending at the "old crossing" on the river up on the Platt property. We had a great morning!

Conditions were cool and overcast through most of the morning, including a little bit of rain. It was very birdy, and we encountered at least 4 mixed-species foraging flocks in the riparian woods. Interesting species in these flocks included Golden-crowned Kinglet, Pine Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, and Nashville Warbler. On the Platt property we got great looks at a Grasshopper Sparrow. And the brilliant male Vermilion Flycatcher was still present between the greenhouse and Pond 2. Our most exciting observation of the morning was of 3 bobcats on the Pond 3 trail.

Here's our bird list:

And see the attached observations for a few photos of the Grasshopper Sparrow, Vermilion Flycatcher, and bobcat.

Description

This was among lots of raccoon tracks right by the river. I thought this one might be something different. Does this track show evidence of fur on the animal's foot?

Description

We were very lucky to see three Bobcats cross the trail near Pond 3 this morning. I think two of them (including this one) must have been young -- they actually crossed the trail twice in front of us. And one even stayed on the side of the trail and watched us for a few moments. The overcast conditions made photography difficult, but I was happy to at least get this fuzzy shot. Taken during the monthly bird survey at Hornsby Bend.
