Description

Can anybody tell me the exact species of these guys? Just found them munching my miniature rose bush. My son wants to see what they turn into but my rose bush lost most of it's leaves during it's dormant winter period, we need to find another food source. They are tiny, probably only first instar. Thanks

Purser Moth

A version of the species in the ground? This one is entirely in the bush.

Looked through over 12 pursers (some more at http://www.ispot.org.za/node/189231) before I found this character (the others were empty or else the pillars sneaked away or dropped off without my noticing).

These unusual caterpillars hatched out from a specimen of Senecio brachypodus we had collected. The bigger of the two individual caterpillars was about 5 mm long, the second only about 3 mm. The second presumably hatched out later from the eggs shown in two of the images.

larva devouring the inside of an inflated thorn base, identified by accumulation of dropping to the outside, even after the thorn was cut open and the larva disturbed it continued to tidy its chamber and push dropping out. Is this a lepidopteran larva or perhaps that of a sawfly?
