Ruff (Calidris pugnax)

Observer

Description

** Rare. Continuing and presumably attempting to overwinter. Found by Rick Fournier. Last time I saw this individual it was associated with yellowlegs and dowitchers. Last visit there were almost no yellowlegs around. When I stopped at the pull-off above Estrada Marsh today (2:20 p.m.), I immediately heard yellowlegs calling excitedly, looked toward Kirby Park where I heard the calls, and immediately spotted the Ruff. Pardon the poor but suggestive to diagnostic photos. It was a plump shorebird with distinctive large body, small head impression and a short and slightly drooping bill. I drove down to Kirby Park expecting better photos in the late afternoon light but lost it behind the Salicornia and didn't relocate, expecting it to walk out any moment.
