Description

This is my 1,000th iNat observation, so it is appropriate that this is a special observation. I wasn't sure whether to post this at all, since this appears to be the first observation of this species in southern California in the last 74 years, and I didn't want to encourage people to go trampling sensitive areas to try to relocate it. To help prevent that, I've obscured the location by a half mile, and placed it in a non-sensitive area. Also, please note that these plants are only two inches high, and are nearly impossible to see among the taller plants it grows with. Note also that these plants are very late in the year bloomers, so you won't find them earlier in the year.

The last voucher of this species from San Jacinto Mountain was in 1946. The last voucher of this species from San Bernardino Mountain was in 1931. Those are the only two vouchered locations of this species in southern California.

We have previously looked for this species in Tahquitz Valley and Round Valley at least ten or fifteen times without finding them. I had given up hope of ever seeing this species. Others have looked hard for this species, too, without success.

So imagine my surprise when I found three plants of this species when I was NOT looking for it! Two plants in these pix are in bloom. I found a third plant not in bloom at home when I looked at my pix.

If the plants are not in bloom, they are essentially impossible to find. I tried to relocate these plants 12 days later. I had the GPS point from this observation, and I remembered exactly where they were. But without blooms on the plants, I couldn't find them despite searching for them for almost an hour! Only on my third try, when I retraced my steps used to originally find them, was I able to spot them. See:
