Leaves are opposite, linear, entire, and simple. Plant is short-statured, less than one foot in height. Flowers form a spike inflorescence, with five miniscule (<2 mm in length) petals, five sepals, and five stamens. Flowers are radially symmetric, and the petals are fused into a tube. The ovary is superior with an axile placentation.
Leaves are ternately compound, elliptic to ovate with serrate margins. However, some leaves are linear with entire margins. Stipules are present. Height is about one foot. Inflorescence forms a panicle, and flowers are radially symmetric with five petals, five sepals, and many (10+) stamens. The ovary is superior and placentation appears to be basal.
