Slender Centaury (Centaurium tenuiflorum)

Observer

Description

A minor weed scattered in disturbed Melaleuca armillaris clifftop scrub. The lack of a basal rosette of leaves and the fact that the calyx is moe than 2/3 the length of the floral tube (just, in this instance) means it keys to C. tenuiflorum. In my experience this species has deeper pink flowers and fewer of them than C. erythraea.

Dune Fan-Flower (Scaevola calendulacea)

Observer

Date

Description

The very fleshy leaves and pale blue flowers show this to be S. calendulacea, not S. aemula, which was also around in the burnt areas of melaleuca scrub along the Green Cape cliffs. This was just one patch of a couple of square metres part-way down the cliff (hence the lack of a close-up photo). Although more often on dunes, I have seen this species on sea cliffs in the Illawarra. The 2nd photo shows the location (Scaevola in foreground, darker plant in the background is Alyxia buxifolia).

Description

Abundant on Ozothamnus diosmifolius flowers, which did not appear to be quite open yet, but well attended by insects. These were only about 3mm long, and made occasional flights among the flowers. Pretty sure they are beetles. The AI came up with Valgus, which is apparently not in Australia, and Mordella, and it seems to lack the pointy abdomen tip of that genus, so I'm stumped.
