On our last day in Florida, we visited Jonathan Dickinson State Park, and it was one of our favorite places! The weather was perfect (overcast, 70's), and the birds were singing like crazy. It was wonderful!

Found in a wetland habitat being considered as the site for a possible highway.

It has not yet been approved and is very much worth fighting against!

I came out here to document some of the native species that call this area home. Please spread the word about this area's importance as a wetland with many native species present and worth protecting.

I created a project on iNaturalist that includes observations from the wetlands and farmlands that would be affected: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/no-to-the-kendall-parkway

Description

Probable Phylum Pterophyta. Located in front of a dark body of water. Suspected to be part of the maiden fern family (Thelypteris) do to being close to the water. Color is a moderately bright green, and, depending on lighting, appears to have tints of yellow. No reproductive structure was present due to the fence blocking viewers from entering. No reproductive structures or spores were present at this angle. As for size, the fern appeared to favor growing laterally rather than vertically, but it was reasonably moderate in size. Stem/stalk was similar in color with the leaf-like structures.

Identified as a fern according to Florida's Department of Environmental Protection's Wetland plants Key. Appears more likely to be a member of the Thelypteris family according to iNaturalist's visual identification system.

Description

I believe to have found a Stately Maiden Fern due to my observation following common characteristics of the Maiden Fern as well as it being native to Tampa, Florida. I observed the Stately Maiden Fern on 2/6/2020 around approximately 6 pm. The weather was cold and gloomy as was about to rain. The Fern was located in a shady area near a stream that led to a pond. Ferns are often analyzed to show the health of an environment; since the fern was a healthy, very pigmented green it can be assumed the environment is thriving. Ferns have also been speculated to remove air pollutants from the environment. The size of the fern was relatively similar to those around it, causing it to blend in with the brush surrounding it. I would estimate a leaf was two and a half feet long.

This is a seedless vascular plant found in a nature park. The leaves of the fern are symmetrical and they are also long as well. They are shaped like an arrow. The leaves closet to the central stem are broader and get narrower towards the tip. The plant contain roots, stems, and complex vascular leaves. https://www.britannica.com/plant/fern

This picture was taken at Lettuce Lake Park. The genus of this species is Adiantaceae which means "unwettted." It has this name because of the frond being able to shed water without getting wet. The Maiden Fern has dark black stripes and it is bright green. It has delicate leaf tissue. This species is native to North America. It can grow to be 6-18 inches. This fern prefers light shade and moist conditions.
