After recently posting on the Minors of this species which were collected by Peter Slingsby I managed to find some Majors yesterday. They were nesting in an old rotten piece of wood. They measure somewhere in the 7-7.5mm range. There are some naked pupae visible in the second image. I added a post on the Minors of this nest here: http://www.ispotnature.org/node/824318. The first post I did on the minors is what I base this ID on. See here: http://www.ispotnature.org/node/819779.

Description

Growing in garden as a weed. Not planted. This plant has been popping up on a flowerbed for several years and has produced a lot of seeds. The seeds germinated at the end of October after good heavy first rains and the small plants are now 20-35 cm high during a wet November and early December 2020.
I was ordered to dig them all up by the Old lady since they dont look nice. I pulled up the largest parent one (1.08m from bottom of bulb to top of inflorescence) The bulb came out of the ground easily it was quite shallow. My hands were coivered in a slimy substance ( which as a Chemist I assume to be a saponin). After throwing the plant of the rubbish heap, about 5 minutes later a quite painful irritation occurred on both hands which despite extensive washing lasted for about 30 minutes, It was more than itchy and a bit painful and unpleasant. My pink skin on my wrists changed to red but there were no swellings or blisters. A few hours later I looked at the plant again on my compost heap and found a white liquid oozing from the leaves and forming droplets. Perhaps a steroidal saponin is in this liquid. I offered leaves of the plant to my ever-hungry pet rabbit but after a sniff he refused to eat the leaves.

This species is not documented in the Preliminary Checklist of Botswana plants by Setshogo as an albca or in the Flora of Botswana website. I assume it is listed as ornithogalum tenuifolium F.Delaroche subsp. tenuifolium I find it often in Serowe village and recently have seen more plants in empty spaces in Gaborone. Ill try and get pics. I suspect it is quite abundant in Eastern Botswana.

Found a tiny clay structure like a pot resting on a small branch of a small vachellia or senegalia sp tree. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/35626975 It was about 1.5 cm x 1 cm. One side was open and I could see a larva inside which at first I thought was a wasp larva. Being foolish, I touched the 'clay pot'. It fell to the ground about 1.3m and smashed. There was a pillar inside. The photo shows remaining pieces of the clay pot and the pillar. I assume the clay pot was made by a wasp which was building around the pillar. Perhaps the pillar has already had wasp eggs laid in or on it. At first the pillar was immobile but after a couple of minutes it was walking quite fast. I am rearing the pillar and giving it fresh leaves of a variety of vachellia and senegalia sp. More on the story at https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/35774356

I've looked for moth pollinators before by torchlight and never had any luck. At 5.50 with sunset at 6.40 it was still very light. About 10 moths were visiting a small population of flowers. So it would seem the action happens before sunset.

A scrappy expanse of silky refuges and capture webs littered with body parts of previous victims. When preferred prey is entangled, the female spiders emerge from their 'nests' and overpower it by grabbing its extremities. In this case, a wasp https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/9319446.
Presumably they inject venom because after a minute or so the prey stops struggling. Then they snip it out of the web and carry it into one of several 'nests' or refuges.
Unwanted prey, often beetles (see https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/9319435 ) are also killed but sometimes left in the web, uneaten. Ants, in this case, Maranoplus ( https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/9319390 )scavenge around the periphery of the webs, feasting on unwanted beetles or other left-overs.
