I couldn’t quite believe my eyes. It was tentatively swimming with a few juvenile zebra-striped surf chub in a large tide pool, but it was generally more shy. Eventually approached near enough for me to snap a few pics.

Description
These may be the only live photos of this rare endemic Hawaiian pipefish. It was found in shallow water a few feet deep in weed right in front of the Waikiki Aquarium by one of the aquarium staff, photographed in a tank (by me), and then returned to the reef. It is so rare that even the famed ichthyologist Dr. John E Randall, who dived and collected fish in Hawaii for over 50 years, writes that he never saw one.

ID with help from Milton Love and Jack Engle at University of California, Santa Barbara. Overall length about 3cm. Very shy. 5-6 individuals observed in crevices at around 50-60’ depth in the dive park at Catalina Island. Possibly a range extension for this species. This was the only image I was able to capture that was worthwhile.
