It was perching on a telephone pole, but I didn't notice until we were right below it. By the time I got my camera out, it had already started flying away, and I only got a picture from the worst angle, and it was too dark for my camera to show any details or colors.

It was calling a lot earlier from right above us in a tree, but dogs were also barking too much for me to record it.

The telephone pole it was sitting on was short, and I could see it clearly. It was an adult, with the distinct orange feathers on its chest and a brown body and wing with some light spots, with a light and dark striped tail with a chunk of feathers missing.

I still don't understand why they're called red shouldered hawks when it's orange instead of red, and on their chest instead of just their shoulders.

I have rejected the community taxxon because I am 100% sure of what I saw and heard, adult red shouldered hawks are one of the ones I can recognize on sight, and there's one that lives right by our appartment, so I hear it call all the time.
