Not sure if these burls are caused by viruses, fungi or insects. Three trees were badly infested, others growing nearby were untouched. Tree is thought to be Populus sp.

"More than 90 percent of the 103 species of lemurs in Madagascar are in severe danger of disappearing from this Earth forever. Why the crisis? Since a political coup in 2009, laws are not being enforced and illegal logging, fires to turn forests into charcoal and hunting of lemurs is rampant throughout much of Madagascar."

My travel from Canada to Madagascar generated an estimated environmental impact of 6,3 tons of CO2. Instead of “compensating” this negative effect by paying 280$ CAN in this case, I prefer to have a direct positive effect on the countries that I visit. For this particular trip, I donated 215$ US to the rainforest conservation fund of Stony Brook University, to support activities of the ValBio center (https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/centre-valbio/index.html).
"Centre ValBio works to protect Madagascar’s unique and biologically diverse ecosystems through conservation science and projects that directly benefit the local people, including rural health care delivery. CVB has a world-class research station sited on the edge of Madagascar's beautiful and abundant Ranomafana National Park. Under the direction of world-renowned primatologist Patricia Wright, Centre ValBio facilitates hands-on science to sustain the resources and people of Madagascar. In collaboration with villagers, we're expanding the frontiers of knowledge while safeguarding biodiversity for future generations."
Consider supporting the ValBio center if you visit this country and more especially, Ranomafana National Park: https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/centre-valbio/giving.html
Met up with @kimberlietx for a little walk this morning. Nice and humid but still saw a few cool things.
Doing a little iNatting on a road trip from Iowa back to Texas- no better way to stretch the legs! The rest stop/Missouri Welcome Center just past the Iowa border into Missouri on I-35 Southbound has a fantastic pollinator garden and there were quite a few butterflies, some dragonflies, and some birds. I got out of my car to walk the trail around the garden, saw a dragonfly, and immediately went back to the car to get the camera.
