I couldn't believe it: I was watching in wonder at the picathartes hopping around near us (observation here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/183886967), when this pangolin fell out of (jumped from?) a taller tree into the tree right above us... What a day!

Seen at ~1,600m altitude, on a rockly outcrop below the summit of Chikala Hill.

There seems to be some discussion as to whether E. vincenti is a species on its own or a sub-species of the E. capensis. One of the reasons for this is the call of the bird (noted in a lot of literature to be virtually identical to the E. capensis) - I have therefore recorded and uploaded the call this bird made as it hopped around on the rocks. There were 4-5 birds, but most hiding behind grass or inside branches of leaves of a small shrub. Later there was another group of 2-3 hopping around nearby (possibly some of the same individuals as in this observation) and I will post these as a separate observation.

White above eye and on chest, rufous on rump and flanks

Large geographical variation for this bird. This coloration corresponds to other specimens observed in southern Malawi (specifically Mulanje):

Song seems also to have a local dialect.
