"melanistic"- hummingbird iridescence arent normal pigments

Back to his favorite snag from last spring. This was the presumptive ID made from the hummingbird experts that studied it last year (and a possible F2 backcross)

This one stumped our guide. He thought it could be a Costa's hybrid but he wasn't sure. It behaved like a Costa's.

Leucistic male

continuing from 3 Aug. finally got spread tail shots to confirm ID.

The famous white hummingbird

Female, possibly leucistic? A few tail feathers show a slight greenish tinge, visible in the additional photos. Occasional visitor to backyard feeder, private residence.

This record is outside the normal range for the species. Many birders came to look at the bird, which stayed for several days. The bird brought attention to itself with the loud wing buzz in flight.

There seem to be relatively few images of this endemic Trans-Pecos species in natural settings in its native range (e.g. Google Images).
