On this vertical face there are hundreds of holes. Some have been used as in photo 1. Others are in current use, and I saw an insect (probably a bee) fly into a hole and come back out. Couldn't get a photo of the insect. I assume these are nest holes.

This native digger bee was found in coastal chaparral near San Diego, California. She was perched on a dried plant, "bubbling" a small drop of regurgitated nectar to concentrate it through evaporation before bringing it back to her nest to feed her offspring.
